5 Photography Tips for Summer — with Andy Parry

1. When Will My Reflector Show?

An all-time underrated tool in the proverbial belt is the reflector — Especially for summertime when that sun is BLASTING. The sun will almost always be your giant Key Light in the sky and a reflector is the easiest way to create a fill light on your subject. Using said reflector, you can snag and bounce them beautiful sunbeams back at your subject to get even light onto them!

2. “I Blue myself!” - Tobias Fünke

Because the sun is so harsh throughout almost the whole day, plan a shoot about a half hour after the sun is set. "Blue Hour" offers a lot softer light and tends to bring out details in landscapes that you may not have noticed before. And, if you are taking photos of your Timothy Chalamet-lookin’ friend, this is perfect for your pastel tumblr-esque photography.

3. Polarizer Express

A polarizer is perfect to give your outdoor summer shots a boost. It deepens blue skies and emphasizes clouds. It will also eliminate reflections, reduce glare so colour saturation is increased, and lessen the effects of haze. Polarizers can lose about 2 stops of light so keep an eye on your exposure!

4. The Road Less Travelled

A lot of tourist destinations in Sask will be loaded during the summertime because, well, why wouldn’t they? Beaches and campsites are hype as hell during the 16 days of summer we get. Though, sometimes meandering kindly through some of the backroads in Saskatchewan can lead to some incredible spots with forgotten homes and winding roads.

(**NOTE** Take the proper steps before going onto land that may be someone else's)

5. Scout Motto

Always be prepared! Outside of the actual photos you are taking, you have to take into account the extremities of the outdoors. Bring some water, bring some good shoes, and some gosh darn bug spray. Some light planning and preparation can also spare a lot of trouble!
